CHEVY - CHEVROLET  WHEEL BEARING ADAPTER - Part Number FS-178RA
This bearing adapter is designed to be used with our 1941-59 tapered roller inner bearing FS-216R or FS-216K bearing kits. This will allow these bearings to be used on 1925-1940 cars & pickups. FS-178RA Installation Instructions This sleeve is intended to be used in the FS-216R tapered roller bearing to adapt for use on 1925-1940 models. You will need a small tube of Loctite 680 or Permatex Sleeve Retainer (green) to insure that the sleeve does not spin in the bearing. Loctite 7471 Primer is optional, but will insure a good bond between the two surfaces. To install sleeve in to bearing, use the following procedure: 1. Clean both mating surfaces with wax & grease remover or lacquer thinner. 2. (Optional) If you are going to use the 7471 primer, put primer on both cleaned surfaces. Allow primer a few minutes to dry before installing the sleeve. 3. Heat the roller bearing in a 200 degree oven for 5-10 minutes. This will expand the metal to allow an easier press fit between the two surfaces. Note! Do not test fit the sleeve, as it can seize into the bearing if it warms to the bearing temperature. Do not heat or freeze the sleeve. It should fit the bearing with just the expansion of the bearing once it’s heated. 4. Coat the mating surfaces of the sleeve and the bearing with a thin coat of Loctite or Permatex. 5. Important! If the sleeve is misaligned at all when you insert it into the bearing, it will bind, so be careful to get the sleeve started as straight into the bore as possible. While the bearing is still warm and in its expanded state, align the sleeve as close to parallel of the bearing as possible and use an arbor press, bearing drift, or similar to press the sleeve into the bearing. Do not hammer the sleeve, as this can distort the beveled flange. Once you get it started without binding, it should go all the way into the bore of the bearing without a problem. Don’t hesitate to get the sleeve pressed all the way into the bearing. If the sleeve is allowed to get as warm as the bearing, it could seize before it has fully seated. If this happens, take a cube of ice and rub it on the inside of the sleeve to cool and contract the sleeve. This should allow you to press the sleeve the rest of the way into the bearing. Once the bearing cools, the sleeve should never spin in the bearing and should be permanently installed. 6. If you have any questions regarding the installation, you can call or email us.
